Dear Riders,

After meeting and talked with JPJ officers, they said its allright to use a bicycle rack but with PERMIT or SURAT KEBENARAN. I had obtain the form from Mr Sim Nai Lee from LP MTB CLUB, Bukit Mertajam regarding to the matter. Thanks ya Mr Sim! The rules are like these,

1) Fill in the form (MUST TYPE)

2) 3 Photos of your bicycle rack eg. Front, Side, Rear.

3) Your I/C copy

4) Your vehicle Registration Card copy

5) An empty envelope with stamp and your own address

JPJ Kacau Lagi

Ok, today I received a call from one of the cycling friend to complain his dissatisfaction of JPJ action against vehicle owner that mounted a bicycle carrier on their car. This time my friend had summitted an application letter to JPJ a week before, but the JPJ officers had issued him a verbal warning as well as a ticket to ask him to uninstall his bicycle carrier and send to JPJ for checking. He is only allow to install back his bicycle carrier once the application letter has been approved. JPJ is starting to crack down the vehicle owner that mounted a carrier on their vehicle for fearing that they are caring a ladder or any items that will be endangered to the safety of other vehicle when travelling down the road. Well I wish to comment that, PLEASE LOOK CLOSELY WHAT DIFFERENT BETWEEN BIKE CARRIER AND A CARRIER? Dear JPJ, please do observe and with analytical mind to make the best conclusion out of your very wise justification and not blatanly issueing us summons? Bicycle carrier of course come with safety strap and locking mechanism to hold the bike into the place and prevent it from falling off from the carrier. Furthermore will we as bicycle lovers will jeorpadise our thousand of ringgit or even more expensive than our own car itself bicycle been dangling on the top of our car unsecured? Our bicycle is our second wife and we love our bicycle more than our car. So please go catch to those car who have only carrier and NOT US !! JUST LEAVE US ALONE OK?

Tour De Genting - "The Suicide Ride"

I couldn't believed that I had finally made it at last!. Well alot of people including my daddy and mummy, my wife, and my princess said I am nuts riding 2 wheels to Uncle Lim's mountain. I also wondering how many crazy or siao kia people would actually ride to the top of the Genting Highland just for the sake for fun of it. Yes I am insane, I am crazy, I am nuts but that's me and my whole members of SPMTB from Sungai Petani, Kedah had finally made to the top of the Genting Highland from 9:00AM to 2:30PM (what a shame !!..haha). But honestly speaking, the mountain is killing me with its awesome 35-38 degrees tilting , 5 km before reaching to the top. I was very freaking exhausted and hunger (even though dah hantam POWERBAR and 100plus). So brothers and sisters out there, I am telling you, if you want to go up to Genting Highland, please bring more FOOD please because you would never know you going to need it or die of hunger. Lucky got one friend who missed us very much and simply drive to Genting Highland with his car and his lover to supply us another round of chocolate bar!! hooooray!!..thank you very much ya AH SIEN a.k.a ZS..without you really we sure cannot make it lo. We will always remember you ya. Anyway the good thing was the weather was cold and fine that morning. I got the opportunity to sprint down hill with only 40-50 minutes. It was not fast enough to make a record because the damn hill got few hill to cycle up and its very time consuming. But hell ya who give the F*** as long as we had made it and I hope I will never return there again. ha ha ha.. before you guys and gals going for the pictures I would like to take this opportunity to THANK First World Hotel management people of their kind cooperation and help to let us park our expensive bike on the VVIP car park. We are proud and happy because the way they handled our bike and people is done professionally. THANK YOU!

Thule Carrier Kena tahan JPJ ?

I couldn't believe it. JPJ is starting to amend their law that having a bicycle Thule is an offence. WTF!!! My friend who is a police traffic officer attached to Sungai Petani has been stop by JPJ officers at the Jalan Ibrahim for having bicycle Thule carrier on top of his car! Common..please get real, government has spend million of ringgit to organise international cycling event such as Triathlon, Le Tour De Langkawi, Jelajah Malaysia and so on to boost up our sport industry as well as tourism. But with this contradict law from the JPJ, then down in few year the foreign cyclists need to put their bikes inside a lorry instead, reason : JPJ not allowed. This is very shameful and disgrace to our cycling communities not in Malaysia but all over the world. I already wrote a letter to JPJ Director in Kedah for clarification and forwarded to THULE Malaysia for them to get ready for their business "impact". He he he..good luck everyone and don't get stress our of it.

*sell your Thule to the scrapyard for RM 20.00 cause its too light when the law is amended.!! hahaha...*

MCA Youth Sungai Petani is proudly organised 2 events, Mountain Bike Cycling and Running at Lembah Bujang, Merbok, Kedah. The Lembah Bujang Jamboree 2009 is co-organised by SP MTB Club and SP Running Club. The event is held on 13 June 2009. The distance for the Running event is 10km while the distance for the Mountain Bike event is 40km. Went to see Dr Khoo in his clinic for medical examination. I had very bad stomach ache for 3 days after consuming dirty rojak by the road side. Today the pain is the greatest that I can't hold it anymore. Dr Khoo gave me variety tablets for me to consume, especially the charcoal one, total damage - only RM28.00 ... I wish I could get well tomorrow. Wish me well everyone..

Wei Yiik suggested that we headed to Zi Wei Yuan Steam Boat Restaurant in Raja Uda for Yum steam boat dinner. Only 4 of us (me, Wei Yiik, Chin Wei & Terk) went for the dinner as Mern Seong was in Penang. The fresh seafood and vegetables were mouth watering and tasty with Yum soup in the steamboat. As usual Terk fell asleep in the car again when on the way back.

My "NEW" Giant XTC

I am so happy that the Giant upgrading project is finally end. Managed to get a pair of Element Xero wheels that really fit nicely into my bike from Terk. Sold all used Shimano Deore groupset and Mavic CrossRide to Chin Wei. My modification are as below,

Uncle William, Chin Wei & Wei Yiik (Koosh) went night ride and we met up in KFC clock tower with Ah Terk. Yong didn't join us as he was very busy to stocking his good in his shop. After the meal, we decided to go join Yong in his shop. Soon after that, Sien was calling Yong and everyone to join him in his home in Lagenda Height, to see something. Well when we reached there, we saw a shining white 2-door roadster parking next to his RX-8. It was stunning BMW Z4 cabriolet with softtop! Picture is not available for the moment because to keep it as secret! hehe.. Anyway, Sien invited us to have some wine and beer before going back. The drinking session was gone too far Chin Wei challenged Ah Terk to finish the beer and it went on until 2AM. Everyone was drunk after the dice game. Wei Yiik -down, Ah Terk - down and vomitted after dropping him off, Chin Wei - down and off course vomitted too in front of my shop, Yong - drunk. Me? I didn't drunk just I got little bit high and I headed home soon after dropping all drunkers home. It was a good night.

Do You Know Where Your Bike is Made?

Some bike companies have a few secrets. And one of those secrets is where your bike is made or who actually made it. The bike companies like it that way because many of them rely upon the same factories to build their bikes!The big picture is pretty clear: around 95% of the bikes sold in the U.S. are made in China or Taiwan by a handful of manufacturers of which Giant is the largest. Generally speaking, low to mid level bikes are made in China and mid to high level bikes are made in Taiwan. The exception is carbon; many manufacturers use Chinese manufacturers to make their carbon frames – even their high-end racing frames.When it comes to knowing where your bike is made, shouldn’t it be as easy as looking at the sticker on your bike or what is printed on the box in which your bike came? After all, how confusing can a label that says “Made in the USA” or “Made in France” or “Made in Italy” be?

Cannondale - Aluminum Cannondales are made in the U.S. Cannondale, which was owned by founder Joe Montgomery and his son Scott. Cannondale is now owned by its key investment fund after experiencing financial problems. Cannondale's market share appears to have diminished but stabilized. According to Bicycle Retailer and Industry News in June 2007, low-end Cannondales are made in Taiwan - probably by Fritz-jou. Others are welded and painted in Taiwan then sent to the US for assembly. The Synapse is made by Top Key.In February 2008, Dorel Industries announced the acquisition of Cannondale and Sugoi clothing in an all-cash transaction of $190 million to $200 million. Dorel purchased Pacific Cycle (Schwinn, Mongoose, and GT Bicycle brands) in 2004.

Colnago - In 1944, when Ernesto Colnago served as a 12-year old apprentice in the shop of Dante Fumagalli, did he have any idea he would become the most famous of all Italian frame builders? Colnago is, perhaps, the most coveted of all professional-quality bicycle brands - just look at the pages of VeloNews or Pro Cycling and see how many professional riders race on Colnagos! Frames are still hand-made in Italy, except for three entry level aluminum models made in Taiwan (probably by Giant) and the carbon CLX, which is also made in Taiwan.

Giant - You may have ridden a bicycle made by Giant without knowing it! Giant is the world's largest bicycle manufacturer with factories in Taiwan, China, and Europe. Giant, a Taiwanese company started in 1972, manufacturers their own bikes - including the carbon bikes, which is unique in the industry (i.e., most other brands utilize other manufacturers such as Advanced or Martec). In addition to making their own bikes, Giant also makes, or has made, bikes for many other prominent brands, including Trek, Specialized, Schwinn, and Bianchi. Giant's claim to fame is that they have the most sophisticated and efficient manufacturing facilities in the bicycle industry. A bit of trivia is that Giant owns 30% of Hodaka, a key Taiwanese supplier for many brands such as Bianchi.5 Giant also sponsors the T-Mobile professional cycling team.

Haro - a California BMX company started in 1977 by Bob Haro. All production comes from Asia. Haro owns the Masi brand. Kenstone, with factories in Tawan and China, is a key supplier.

Jamis - Jamis is the house brand of G. Joannou Cycle, a long-time distributor of bicycles and accessories. The bicycles are designed in the U.S. and sourced from Asia.

Kona - a California company with all production from Asia. Kona, founded in 1988, is a very small company similar in size to Marin. Fairly and Hodaka in Taiwan are key suppliers.

Kuota - Kuota frames are made in Taiwan by Martec, the same manufacturer that makes Kestrel frames. Kuota is a creation of Sintema, an Italian manufacturer of components. Basically, they designed the frames, had the frames manufactured in Taiwan, and marketed the brand heavily in the U.S., Western Europe, and Australia. Kuota has been a successful brand launch in a very short period of time.

Orbea - Orbea is one of the two large Spanish bicycle manufacturers. It is sort of like Spain's version of Trek or Schwinn. Bikes are produced in Spain and Asia. High-end carbon frames are made in Asia and "finished" (i.e., painted) in Spain. From Bicycle Retailer and Industry News:Orbea builds aluminum frames in-house. Carbon fiber frame production, which accounts for half of its road bikes, up from 20 percent just three years ago, is outsourced to such Chinese specialists as Martec.But unlike many bike makers who are content to tweak stock factory frames, Orbea does all of its carbon fiber frame design, engineering and prototyping in-house. It builds its own molds for new frames and assembles several dozen prototypes before handing off manufacturing instructions to China."We need to keep and develop our own knowledge of composites and carbon fiber, and then to find someone who can work with us to build what we want them to build," Joseba Arizaga (Orbea's marketing manager) said. "We make the molds, the first frames, everything here in Orbea. Then, when we are ready to do mass production, we send the instructions to Asia."

Pinarello - This Italian company has been producing world-class frames since the 1950's. Pinarello - along with Colnago and DeRosa - is one of the Italian "big three." You can visit their website, pinarello.com, for a nice history of the company. Some frames are now made in Taiwan, including the aluminum Galileo. I haven't been able to confirm this, but apparently the carbon frames are made in Asia then shipped to Italy for painting and assembly.

Schwinn - Schwinn was for many years the largest American brand. All bicycles were made domestically until the late 80's. In 1985, Schwinn management called mountain bikes a "fad" - oops.12 After two bankruptcies, Schwinn is now owned by Pacific, who also owns GT, Mongoose, and the Pacific (and some other brands). Pacific is headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin. Under Pacific's ownership, the Schwinn brand is returning to prominence. Pacific sells more bicycles than any other brand in North America. However, that includes Pacific brands sold at WalMart, Target, etc.13The bikes sold in the U.S. are made in Asia, many by Giant.

Scott USA - Scott got its start in Sun Valley, Idaho, when Ed Scott developed the first aluminum ski pole in 1958. In the 80's, Scott developed a bike line. Eventually, Scott pulled out of the U.S. market and focused on Europe, where Scott is headquartered.14After an absence of several years, Scott has returned to the U.S. market under the direction of Scott Montgomery of Cannondale fame. Although the company is headquartered in Switzerland, production comes from Asia, with key suppliers being Hodaka and Giant.

Specialized - Started in 1974 by Mike Sinyard, Specialized has enjoyed a long-standing reputation for being a leading bicycle design and marketing company.Several years ago, Merida (a Taiwanese manufacturer) bought a substantial interest in Specialized. Although Specialized is still headquartered in California under the leadership of founder Mike Sinyard, all bikes are made in Asia. Key Asian suppliers are Merida, Ideal, and Giant.

Trek - It's hard to believe that America's largest bicycle brand had humble beginnings in a barn! Yet in 1976, Dick Burke - with an investment of $25,000 - started making bicycle frames in a little red barn near Madison, Wisconsin. By 1980, Trek built their first manufacturing plant in Wisconsin and the rest, as they say, is history!15After many years of making its own bicycles in the U.S., Trek moved entry and mid level bicycle manufacturing to Asia. In 1992, Trek introduced its proprietary OCLV carbon process (Optimum Compaction Low Void) which is still used in its handmade carbon frames. All OCLV carbon frames - road and mountain - are still made in Waterloo, Wisconsin. The all-carbon 5000 (which does not feature OCLV) is made in Asia.Worldwide, Trek is the second largest bicycle company after Giant (of the brands sold only in bicycle stores). They are one of the most sought-after brands by U.S. dealers because of their strong commitment to brick and mortar bicycle stores (i.e., the brand cannot be sold mail order or over the Internet) and because of their dealer-friendly policies.Trek owns (or licenses) Fisher, LeMond, Klein, and Bontrager.

The International Offroad Mountain Bike Challenge 2008 held in Kuala Ketil, Kedah was ended up successfully at 28th December 2008. Although there were only 50 participants shown up for the event despite the event clashed with Taiping Jamboree and Tour De Penang Island that held at the same date, this event was awesome with many technical tracks to tackle with. The event start at 10:00AM, end at 4:30PM.

Finally I had came with the toughest decission I'd ever made, that was to sell off my bike, Giant Anthem 3. I love this bike just that due the financial constraint and limited space at home had forced me to come with such decission. Sadly to think this bike has been with me for 1 year and she was well taken care of, wash, clean, waxing and she is always clean and sexy! But the luck was on me, the person who bought this was the Alvin from Honda SP. I put my bicycle on sale in Yong bicycle shop with the hope that she will be delivered to the right and care new owner. Tour of SP-Hatyai (approx.160km)

Cycling from Sungai Petani, Kedah to Hatyai, Southern Thailand was the most unforgetable moments. The cloudy weather in the morning had added extra advantage to keep us from the heat. We made some stop at the several places such as Bedong, Gurun, Kota Sarang Semut, Alor Setar, Jitra and Changloon before reaching Malaysia and Thai Border at Bukit Kayu Hitam. The most tortured time was cycling along Phet Kasem tar road before reaching Hatyai. The hilly and strong wind made almost impossible to ride and furthermore our legs had started to cramp. We had no choice but to made the worst decission to stop before reaching Hatyai. We stop at the most delicious Da Tong chicken rice shop before reaching Hatyai City to stay a night in Lee Garden Hotel.

I found this used condoms scattered along the drain near the mountain bike trail. Why they are many unscrupulous people who find open sex in the trail are so facinating and exciting. The new social-economic has reach to a new different level and people are just willing to try new thing out. Personally I find outdoor sex is thrilling, awesome and challenging too. The fear for been arrested and also a subject of voyeurism are the main issue and seem like our community nowadays dare to move to a new perspective and perception... sex is rather exciting and exhilarating..

Farewell Party in 32 Mansion

It was a joyful moment for all of us as being able to celebrate the farewell to John Yow for Bermuda, United States. The dinner was held in 32 Mansion, Penang. It was John idea to celebrate his farewell as its already 2 years we all didn't get a chance to meet up and chat all night long! We had nice food and great wine too. Couple who attended the party were (front row:- , Adrien & Sabrina, Me and my wife Michelle, John & Angie, Wei Wei & Pai Ching, Ping & Cindy).

Last night after had a surprised and fun meeting with LP Club commitees. I personally think they are very committed on their job and take every task given seriously. The meeting room was fantastic, we were served with beers and its air conditioning room too! All members were very friendly and its fun to work with them. After the meeting over, we then headed to another new restaurant to taste water chicken again. The restaurant is call "Restoran New Secret" and located in Sg Puyu. Now I knew what is their top secret is all about...that is to provide the most delicious and mouth watering "water chicken" or so called water frog. The meat is much tastier than the previous we had. I took about 4-5 full bowl of water frog mix with mee and porridge and feeling very very full after that...

SP Jamboree 2008 - as a CREW

Yeah!! SP Jamboree 2008 is finally over and everything went as smooth as expected. I felt so much relief and released. All the hard work had been paid off. I felt glad and excited. The happiest moment was that I am able to get to know many people from all over the states. Well I felt sorry for all riders that had injured themself during the ride especially to No 001 killer Jane. I saw with my own eyes that she was falling helplessly after negotiating steep hill and landed seriously on her face! Lucky she only suffer external facial injury and some minor cuts to her ears and face. She was lucky as some of the riders suffered seriously broken arm after fall. Well I wish them good and get well soon!

I am sick already. Probably flu contracted from that fatty kid next door. He came everyday for a puff or two fags per day. Well I ask him to stay away from me as I knew I can't afford to sick this time. But my body is weak and mine inside is also heating up partly due to constant lack of rest and sleep. I felt very weak and pain. Something is wrong inside me. I went to seek medical treatment twice and the doctor suspected I was down with serious flu infection. I need stronger anti-biotic to fight for my life. I wish I will be alright tomorrow.....

Sorry for not posting this week, I am terribly busy for everything! running my company and to my jamboree. I had problem with my little princess too, she was down with flu. She is what I worried the most. I had to leave behind my job and jamboree stuff for her as she is been hospitalised. My princess had changed my entired life and she meant everything to me.
I think the most pressure, tension and trauma I am having are the jamboree's assignments. Currently I have 2 assignments in my hand that are SP Jamboree 2008 and also BM Mountain Cross 2008. My job required me to handle large chunk of rider's personal datas to be stored into computer database system for updates. I also need to design some of the forms, logos, identification tag, scanning also handling sponsors for the event.
Tired? of course!! I didn't get enough sleep for almost everyday since 3 weeks ago. My mum asked me to stop all these for fearing it will affect my health. But every single hour is worth it. I feel very proud of myself and its my pride and honour to be given an opportunity to perform and to show my ability to handle important project. Although I had been humilliated infront of my buddy for been stupid for taking this job that not even supposed to be under my job scope, to me I felt every single cent is worth it. They will never understand the feeling of achievement to complete the important task that will determine the success or failure for the jamboree. So I tell you succession & perfection only come when we go through every single mistake that we had.

My work is piling up now...of course will ton of fax papers of the entry forms for SP JAMBOREE 2008. From handling the call from riders, receiving the fax, photocopy, posting information into my dedicated website at http://www.spmtbclub.com/ . Sometimes it really time consuming as I need to cope up with my work too. But I feel worth it as being part of the member of SPMTBCLUB and also a fanatic fan of mountain biking. Sometimes I had to work out until 5 a.m in the morning to keep the my website and database going well. Well it's all for now as now already 10:30 PM and I still need to work things out.

Another New Rock Shox SID RACE '09

Its double joy for me as the 2 items I previously ordered was reached at Yong's shop. Yong was so happy to call me to inform that the item had reached his shop. Without much hesitation I reached his shop at 10: 30 AM. From far away I could see a bright light blue colour box on the top of the display shelf. I went in and yes ! its the one! its the one! Finally the shocked that I ever been dreamed of had reached its shore. It a ROCK SHOX SID RACE 2009 model !! Wrapping with clear plastic paper, I could see a pair of glittering white paint was simply fabulous. Its very light and weighed only 1450g. With the 100mm of travel, dual air spring and Motion Control, its just simply rock and could sustain massive force of impact during hardcore ride. The price of the SID? Let I say, its better to be kept as private because simply its not nice to tell it here. Well what ever it is, its had completed my Giant XTC 2009 bike project. Will let you know more for after the next ride.

My New Polar Heart Rate Monitor

I am so happy to collect my new Polar FS1 heart rate monitor from Yong's bicycle shop. Its a basic range and come in dark blue colour but it already cost RM 2x0.00 a piece. The idea I wanted this gadget was when I went to watch Incredible Hulk movie with my wife. I saw the hero was wearing Polar heart rate monitor and he made sure that his heart beats would not gone beyond 200 bps. When it was about to hit the figure, the Polar monitor will beep to warn you. I am getting fancy with it and I think its very cool too. I will try tomorrow during the ride. Wish me luck.

"DOG TAG" as SP JAMBOREE souvenier

Finally I'd came out with an idea to use "DOG TAG" as a replacement for the medal during SP JAMBOREE 2008 event. What is the "DOG TAG" actually means ? Is the "DOG TAG" is use for the canine??? Certainly NOT at all....The "DOG TAG" is a piece of metal plate with neck chain that keep your vital information on it. The information is engraved onto the surface of the metal. The "dog tag" is often used by the army during the war for easy recognition incase they lost their life in the battle field. So the introduction of using "DOG TAG" during the SP Jamboree 2008 is quite a new idea and creative. Riders can simply wear the "DOG TAG" on any occasion or during the ride. I wish "DOG TAG" can become one of the latest in-thing to hit cycling's fashion in the nation.

SAD and DEVASTATING news...

It was quite sad and devastating to hear that one of the cycling group would not take part and support to the SP JAMBOREE 2008 this year partly due to the misunderstanding with one of the member in the past. I wish this shall not be political motivated like what we had now in our country. It is such ashame when every people around the globe are talking about our country's politic like a laughing stock. Every political based mongering should be avoided to bring harmony and peace to the country. So it does the same in cycling, the main reason of organising cycling event is to promote cycling as one of the fitness sport to the people. Cycling brings a lot of benefit especially for good and healthy lifestyle. People gets to know each other from all over the states and even countries with cycling event. Cycling helps to boost the bilateral relations to a new level on such areas as culture,trade, health and tourism. So everyone, I wish we shall not forget our main goal in cycling that is to bring good health for ourself. Like one said "Money can't buy health". I am pleading everyone to stop politiking and help each other in educating and promoting cycling as one of the best healthy activity in the century.

Courtesy visit from Butterworth

I was so surprised today that 2 friends, Xiao Seong and Chicken Sim from L P Mountain Bike Club, Butterworth came for a courtesy visit to Sg Petani. Xiao Seong brought his brand new Mitsubishi Triton to my shop for wheel alignment and wheel balancing service. In between they met Mr William before we heading for our lunch. I am honoured to be given an opportunity to help Seong on behalf of their club to design the entry form for their upcoming BM Mountain Cross 2008 at 26th October 2008 held in Sungai Lembu, Bukit Mertajam, Penang. The event covered 40km in cross country ride. But riders beware, there are lots of stressful uphill ride especially near Tokun area. Well for mean time I can't leaked out the route for everyone as its quite confidential for the moment. I will update more soon. Xiao Seong and Chicken Sim is quite pleased with the finalising from the layout of the form as they want to keep it simple and nice.

One last thing, Xiao Seong asking for help in designing for their ride certificate. I will start to design tomorrow when I am free. I really like to design in digital art because its so easy and fun. I wish I can help them more if they wanted because the main intention is to promote cycling as sport for all ages and both sex. Cycling also leads to good and healthy lifestyle.

Welcome to My Basikal blog. Let me introduce myself, My name is Allan Chan and now currently staying in Sungai Petani, Kedah. I am addicted to cycling since I was kid. I remembered my parent won't allowed me to go out cycling but I sneaked out. From there on I knew cycling bring me passion, freedom and peace. That's why my love for 2 wheels will never fade away. From there on I involved pretty much of cycling. Its my pride to become a commitee member of SPMTBCLUB. I wish I can help to promote cycling as a major sport as its a way for healthy lifestyle.

So I came out with the idea of My Basikal for my blog because I find the word is unique and "Basikal" is a Malaysia word that bring the meaning "bicycle" in English. The idea of my blog came into my mind when I was having a shower. My Basikal blog will be my media to express my idea, comments, point of view and my every activities related to cycling.
